David Van Asselt

Advanced Acting Faculty

David Van Asselt is the Artistic Director and a co-founder of Rattlestick Playwrights Theater. David started Rattlestick in 1994 with Gary Bonasorte as a home for playwrights, where the focus was on nurturing new work and, especially, producing plays that aimed at getting the playwrights’ vision onstage. Under David’s leadership, the theater has produced close to 100 plays, about 90 percent of which have been world premieres.

Over the years, the theater has produced two world premieres of Sheila Callaghan, six world premieres of Adam Rapp, including the complete Hallway Trilogy where the theater was literally torn apart and reconfigured to make our stage into a long hallway, the world premieres of Annie Baker’s The Aliens, Craig Wright’s Blind, Mando Alvarado’s Basilica, Jesse Eisenberg’s The Revisonist, Jonathan Tolins’ Buyer & Cellar, Keith Josef Adkins’ Pitbulls, and the world premieres of all five of Lucy Thurber’s Hill Town Plays presented simultaneously in five theaters throughout the West Village.

Mr. Van Asselt is also a playwright in his own right, whose plays include Dog Daze, Incident at Irving’s Pet Place (a radio play), A Trip to the Beach, Winning, and One Summer Night. Most recently, his play, A Fable, premiered at the Cherry Lane Theater in New York.
