"The readiness is all"

For four centuries actors have longed to play Hamlet. And for four centuries the part has demanded everything of those who do. Great facility with language, razor sharp wit, and tremendous emotional range are all required. Of course, these necessities are enough to intimidate any actor. But, maybe we have to start by taking it down from the pedestal for a little while and treating it like any other role. What if Hamlet was just Hamlet? Just a person. Like a lot of other people. A person with hopes and dreams and fears and pet peeves, like anyone. Before we can find the sublime in the great part, we have to find the humanity. I'd argue that any and every actor can, and should, spend time working on this role and exploring the layers of this masterful play. Approaching it with respect is wise, but treating it with too much reverence is dangerous. After all, it's a part and it's meant to be played!

Over this 8 week course, we'll immerse ourselves in the text of the play, develop our voices and bodies to take on this demanding work, and spend ample time tackling the great speeches and scenes of Hamlet. This class is open to all students, and all students will spend significant time working on the role of Hamlet. We'll conclude with a sharing of our work for the Studio 4 community and a small group of invited guests.

No matter your goals as an actor, time spent working on Shakespeare's great plays will serve you and make you better. If you're serious about becoming a better actor, this class is for you.
